So the sale of LPs wasn't doing so good, "how should we address this?" Gibson questioned.  Let's make a real thin, light double cutaway guitar but still put the Les Paul name on it!!!  Obviously Angus Young didn't mind this, neither did Tony Iommi (apparently neither of them can lift a LP). In any case Les had his way and in 1963 they called it the SG (stupid guitar).
